Introduction to the animal care and use program

This is a key onboarding course and refresher for any animal research program. Participants learn about the IACUC, regulatory bodies, reporting animal welfare concerns and unexpected adverse events. Additionally users are introduced to the vivarium and the requirements for working in one.

Vivarium orientation

This interactive onboarding course outlines the rules and regulations that are required for any staff member who will be working in a vivarium. It covers the details of requirements for each room type, and guidance on the typical activities in a BSL1 facility.

Animal Facility Disaster training

Emergencies and disasters can occur at any time. This interactive course trains participants on preparedness and reviews what to do in the most common disaster scenarios. This course aligns with the IVS Disaster Plan OG and the updated APHIS contingency plan requirements. It serves as an orientation course and should be reviewed by anyone who works with animals in the vivarium annually.


 
 

Continuing Education in Animal Research - Best Practices

The 3 R’s of Animal Research

It is a requirement of the AWA and is best practice to consider Replacement, Reduction & Refinement, otherwise known as the 3R’s, when designing a research study.

This continuing education course discusses the ethical responsibility of animal users to minimize the pain, distress, and death of the animals used in research through the application of the 3R’s.

Rodent handling & restraint

This course introduces animal users to basic handling and restraint techniques for mice & rats. Best practices are reviewed and demonstrated.

compassion Fatigue

This course discusses the emotional fatigue that people working in the animal research field can experience as a result of repeated exposure to animal distress and/or death.
